Tinea Pedis - Athlete's Foot
Tinea pedis, commonly known as athlete’s foot, is a fungal infection that affects the feet. Our podiatrists frequently treat patients with this condition. Here’s what you need to know about tinea pedis:
Causes
Tinea pedis is caused by a group of fungi called dermatophytes, which thrive in warm, moist environments like locker rooms, public showers, and swimming pools. The fungi can also spread from person to person through direct contact or by sharing personal items such as socks, shoes, and towels.
Symptoms
The symptoms of tinea pedis can vary depending on the type of infection and its severity. Common symptoms include:
Redness and scaling on the feet
Itching, burning, or stinging sensations
Blisters or oozing lesions
Thick, discolored, or crumbly toenails
Unpleasant foot odor
If left untreated, tinea pedis can spread to other parts of the foot, causing discomfort and pain.
Treatment
There are several treatment options for tinea pedis, including:
Topical antifungal medications: These are creams, lotions, or powders that are applied directly to the affected areas. They work by killing the fungi and relieving symptoms. In some cases, prescription-strength topical medications may be necessary.
Oral antifungal medications: These are prescription medications that are taken by mouth. They work by killing the fungi from the inside out. Oral medications are typically reserved for more severe cases or cases that do not respond to topical treatments.
Home remedies: Soaking the feet in a solution of vinegar or saltwater can help relieve symptoms and kill the fungi. Wearing breathable shoes and changing socks frequently can also help prevent the growth of fungi.
Prevention
To prevent tinea pedis, it is important to:
Keep feet clean and dry
Wear breathable shoes and socks made from natural materials like cotton
Change socks and shoes frequently, especially after physical activity or exposure to moisture
Avoid sharing personal items like socks, shoes, and towels
Wear thongs or sandals in public showers, locker rooms, and swimming pools
